Getting started

What working with Koinos actually looks like.

From the first call to an ongoing client relationship: what actually happens, in plain terms, before you commit to anything.

How it starts.

01

A free thirty-minute call.

The first conversation costs nothing and requires nothing. You tell me what’s going on: what’s in front of you, what you’re trying to figure out, what’s been nagging at you. I tell you honestly whether I can help.

If Koinos isn’t the right fit, because of what you need, where you are, or any other reason, I’ll say so and point you somewhere better. That happens. It’s the conversation working correctly.

There’s nothing to prepare. Bring whatever you have, or just bring the question.

What to expect: 30 minutes. Bring whatever you have. No commitment on either side.

02

A written proposal.

If it’s a fit, you’ll receive a written proposal within a few days. It describes exactly what Koinos will do, what it won’t do, and what it costs, in writing, before any work begins.

You approve it or you don’t. Nothing starts until you’ve agreed in writing to exactly what you’re getting and what it costs.

In writing: A 1-2 page document with scope, deliverables, fee, and timeline. You sign it; work begins.

03

The plan gets built.

For a one-time plan or project, Mathew works through your situation: gathering what’s needed, running the numbers, building the analysis, and then delivers a written plan or written answer. You meet to walk through it together, with time to ask every question.

For ongoing planning, the first few months involve getting a full picture of your situation (income, assets, debt, insurance, estate documents, tax returns) and producing an initial full plan. That plan is the foundation everything else builds on.

Timeline: One-time engagements typically deliver within 2-4 weeks of the signed proposal. The initial plan for ongoing clients usually takes 4-8 weeks.

04

You decide what’s next.

For one-time engagements: the plan is yours. You can implement it yourself, bring it to other professionals, or come back to Koinos for ongoing planning. There’s no pressure to continue.

For ongoing planning: the relationship continues. Two formal reviews a year, one early in the year when tax information is fresh, one mid-year, plus Mathew available in between for whatever comes up.

Ongoing: Two review meetings per year. Email access between meetings. The plan updated annually to reflect your life as it is now, not as it was.

Month to month, year to year.

Between meetings

Email Mathew when something comes up: a job offer, a benefits change, a tax form you don’t recognize, a large purchase you’re considering. You’ll hear back. This is a direct line to the person who knows your situation, not a portal or a ticketing system.

Annual reviews

Once a year, the plan gets fully rebuilt: rewritten to reflect your life as it is now, rather than patched with tracked changes. Goals shift, income changes, family situations evolve. The plan should too.

Investment management

Client assets are held at Schwab, an independent custodian. Koinos manages the portfolio (selecting investments, rebalancing, tax-loss harvesting where applicable) so you don’t have to think about it. You have direct access to view your accounts at any time.

Tax coordination

Koinos coordinates with your tax preparer and flags issues before they become problems. Mathew is not a CPA or tax attorney; this is planning coordination, not tax preparation.

The first call is thirty minutes and costs nothing.

Tell me what’s in front of you. If the fit is good, a written proposal follows. If it isn’t, I’ll tell you, and point you somewhere better.

A person to walk with you, year after year.
