The person behind Koinos.

I started Koinos because too many capable people had nowhere good to take their money questions. So I built the kind of place I wished existed, one that’s genuinely in your corner, year after year.

Where this started.

My grandfather was a CPA, and watching him work left an impression. After graduating from Whitworth University I spent several years at Jitasa, the first national bookkeeping firm built specifically for nonprofits, keeping books for organizations doing a great deal on modest budgets.

That’s where I started to see how many careful, capable people had real money questions and nowhere good to take them. The teachers, the program directors, the development staff had chosen their work on purpose and were doing it well, and still often had nobody to call about their own money.

So I went back for a Master of Science in Financial Planning and opened Koinos (the Greek word for common, or shared) as a fee-only fiduciary firm. Financial planning wasn’t missing from Boise. A particular kind of it was: the kind that meets people where they are, not where a firm wishes they were.

Most advisors set a minimum before they’ll return a call. Koinos was built because that’s backwards.

How I think about planning.

Plans should be readable.

Every plan Koinos produces is written in plain English with the reasoning shown: a full explanation of what’s being suggested, why, and what it means for your specific situation, rather than a bare summary of recommendations. You should be able to sit down with it at the kitchen table and follow it yourself.

Advice shouldn’t be tied to products.

Koinos is fee-only: paid only by clients, never by commissions or referral fees. What gets recommended is what’s right for your situation, never what generates revenue for the firm. If the answer is “do nothing,” that’s the answer you’ll get.

The relationship matters.

I build your plan and I’m the one who answers your email three years later. The list stays small enough that every client reaches Mathew directly, with no associate and no queue in between. That’s built into how the firm operates, not a line from marketing copy.

Earlier is better.

The decisions that shape a household’s financial direction mostly get made before there’s a large portfolio to manage. Koinos has no asset minimum because the people who need guidance most aren’t always the ones with the most assets.
